Hebrew Lives in All of Us.

We are an American nonprofit organization that raises funds to support the mission, vision, and critical work of the Academy of the Hebrew Language in Jerusalem, an organization dedicated to the preservation, research and continued development of the Hebrew language.

Hebrew is so much more than a language.

It is a light we carry inside all of us…

It is a thread that connects our past and future…

It is a bond we share with one another, no matter the distance.

More Than Our Language, An Identity.

The Academy of the Hebrew Language brings together Jews, history buffs and language lovers from all around the world. Through its work, the Hebrew language is strengthened as a shared identity for people everywhere.

The History of the Academy of the Hebrew Language

The Academy’s origins date back to 1890, first established as the Hebrew Language Committee by Eliezar Ben-Yehuda, the famed Israeli linguist and father of modern spoken Hebrew.

The committee was replaced by the Academy of the Hebrew Language in 1953, shortly after the founding of the modern State, by an act of the Knesset, cementing the central position of Hebrew in Israeli culture. The Academy has grown and expanded since its inception, and is now composed of a team of dedicated employees, acting and honorary members all located in Israel, plus our US-based Friends of the Academy of the Hebrew Language.
